The Bob Jones Choir is already gearing up for another big performance this week.
SCPA, or the State Choral Performance Assessment, is likely something that most of the Performing Arts are familiar with in one way or another. For this, students in the choir go to a predetermined location, usually another high school or college, to perform choral pieces and sight-read music before judges.
This year, SCPA is being brought to our very own Bob Jones High School Auditorium! Schools from all over northern Alabama are invited to attend, perform, and receive scores.
Patriot Singers and Voices of Liberty will both be performing their own beautiful choral pieces: Salmo 150, a bold, fast-paced Latin song, Hotaru Koi, a traditional Japanese children’s game song, and multiple other songs picked out by Ms. Erbach.
Additionally, in a sight-reading portion of the assessment, students are given a piece of music they have never seen before. Limited to 4 minutes, they are expected to quickly run through it and sing it as well as they can.
So, when is it? It is a two-day event, starting on Thursday, February 12th, and going until Friday, February 13th. The Bob Jones Chorus will be on stage on the 12th, but schools will be visiting and singing throughout both days.
The scoring system ranges from 1 to 4, with 1 being “superior” and 4 being “fair.” Scores for each criterion are summed; the lower the total, the higher the score.
The auditorium will be open to viewers, but attendants will not be excused from class.
The Bob Jones Chorus welcomes you to come watch and support them; wish them luck!
