The past couples of weeks have been stressful for the volleyball teams. They have been traveling across counties and no one can doubt their commitment. Next week, they will be going to Tampa Florida in hope to win state. Erin Shockey says, “The hardest thing in volleyball has to be applying what you learn to the game.” She says everyone is one big family on the team. They all help each other help out and there is always room for another.
On the JV team, there are mostly freshman and have a shorter season than Varsity. People don’t know that volleyball is not only a physical sport but more than anything it’s mental. “We aren’t just throwing the ball up in the air… we always have a plan,” says Shockey. Everyone on the Bob Jones volleyball team has a very special skill that they work on. Either you’re a hitter, a passer, a settler, or an all around player. So far this year they have been to Birmingham and also to Tennessee for tournaments.
Erin Shockey has been playing volleyball for 4 years along with her twin sister Rachel Shockey. Their aunt used to play in high school and college, which proved to be very inspirational. Also one of Erin’s best friends, Kathryn told her mother that she wanted to play volleyball after seeing it on television. They both found a volleyball camp to go to and tried it. They have loved it ever since and naturally Erin and Rachel tagged along.
