Both Madison City middle schools take pride in their football teams. Discovery, who has beaten Liberty for the past seven years, played Liberty Middle School on Thursday. The afternoon started out with the 7th grade Liberty team taking the win over Discovery. Then, what has not happened in seven years, the undefeated 8th grade Discovery football team lost against the Liberty Lions 29-28. The Discovery home side was in shock, while the Liberty away side couldn’t be happier.
The Liberty Head coach said, “Every coach and player worked very hard all year to reach our goal of winning a championship. Discovery is a great team and is very well coached. Both teams played well enough and deserved to win. We were just fortunate enough to come out on top.”
The Discovery vs. Liberty game is the biggest game all year for both teams. The fact that most Liberty kids now go to James Clemons for 9th grade, might spell trouble for Bob Jones in a few years. If Liberty can prove they are better than Discovery in the next years, James Clemons could compete with Bob Jones, unlike the 72-0 defeat they took against Bob Jones this year.
Discovery and Liberty Middle rivalry will always be one of the biggest in Madison City.
