The Lady Patriots recently kicked off their season. Bob Jones was the host of their very own Tip-Off Tournament. The Patriots took full advantage of being the host team by winning the championship Saturday. Senior, Lindsey Jennings had 14 points and Junior, Chandler Elder, had 12 in the tournament final as the Patriots knocked off Oneonta 49-32. Earlier in the day, the Patriots defeated Midfield 57-41 and Davidson 46-29 (All statistics and scores credited to al.com).
Bob Jones is no stranger to winning; nevertheless, making it to championship games. Last year, the Lady Patriots made it to the state finals where they faced off against the Hoover Buccaneers. Although, the Patriots wound up losing the game, they were an athletic and star-studded team. Led by Jasmine Jones, who is now playing for the Volunteers of the University of Tennessee, the Patriots were well on their way to bring more wins back to Bob Jones. However, this season may be just a little different as the Patriots have new coaches and new players.
Danny Petty, former head coach of Bob Jones’ Varsity Boys team, is now the head coach of the Lady Patriots. He replaced former head coach, Tim Miller, who is now an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at his alma mater, The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Another addition to the coaching staff was Andre Reynolds. After graduating six seniors, only four girls remained for this year’s team. However, with the opening of James Clemens, former Patriots star, China Leary is no longer a Patriot but a James Clemens Jet.
Lindsey Jennings, Chandler Elder, and Nadia Stewart are the remaining players from last year. They hope to take the Lady Patriots back to Wallace State and compete for a championship for the sixth consecutive straight time. “This year’s team is growing,” says Nadia Stewart. “I believe we can make it to Wallace, but we have to focus on the small things to achieve this goal,” adds Stewart.
The Lady Patriots will have their first regular season game on Tuesday, November 13, on the road against Grissom at 5:30.
