On November 10th and 11th, students tried out for the Bob Jones Lacrosse Team. Players were cut and there is now a final pool of players waiting to see which team they made.
As most people know, lacrosse is still an un-sanctioned sport at Bob Jones, along with hockey. This means lacrosse runs more like a club team, than a school team.
Lacrosse is a growing sport in America and local schools like Hoover and Spain Park have their own lacrosse fields. At Bob Jones the lacrosse players aren’t even allowed to use the Bob Jones fields, for free at least. It doesn’t help that lacrosse doesn’t get any recognition from the school or even on the schools announcements.
“We call ourselves Bob Jones Lacrosse, but we don’t get any recognition. It really just adds insult to injury,” says Will Jackson, a Bob Jones lacrosse player. “The girl’s program just isn’t big enough to split into school teams,” says Yvonne Bowman, girls Bob Jones Lacrosse player. The school is trying to get lacrosse to be a sanctioned sport, but it could take years.
Fifteen years ago, soccer wasn’t a sanctioned sport. Now, lacrosse is trying.
