JJ is what his friends and teammates call him, but most of us know him as JaMarcus Jones. Jones is a senior and the starting point guard for the Patriots at Bob Jones. He’s played for the Patriots for all of his high school career. In an interview with Nkechi Nnorom, Jones reflected on what the sport of basketball has meant to him, goals for the season, and personal questions including his celebrity crush.
What made you start playing basketball?
JaMarcus Jones: Basketball is in my blood. My whole family has played. I mean I’ve played ever since I could remember.
How would you describe your playing style? How do you maintain your composure doing games?
I would say that I’m more of a shooter. I can shoot well especially off the dribble. I have my own style, but I would say I’m like an Austin Rivers-type player. I try not to be cocky during the games. I like to stay focused by envisioning the plays in my head, and focus on what will happen next.
Who is your favorite athlete?
Dwyane Wade. He’s an amazing guard. I would love to meet him over any NBA player or athlete at the most. I rather meet Wade over Michael Jordan. People say I look like him so wouldn’t he be my favorite player?
Goals for the season?
Obviously I want to go to Wallace and win the championship. Winning it during my senior year would be the sweetest. My team and I just have to get the job done and first win games in the regular season.
Looking past high school, what plans are your future plans?
Playing for the Florida Gators would be my dream. If I can reach the NBA from there that would be a plus too. However, I know it’s not easy to make it the NBA, so my backup plan would be to become a chemical engineer.
Do you have a favorite artist(s) that you like to listen to get you hype before the games? Also, is there a celebrity that you have a crush on?
2 Chainz. He’s my favorite artist right now. Almost every song of his is on my iPod. I also have to say that I listen to Meek Mill and Wale. My celebrity crush would no doubt be Keri Hilson.
Competition looks strong this year. Are there any teams you’re looking forward to playing? Any words for them?
James Clemens. Can’t wait to play against some of my old teammates. Their main threat is Josh Mitchell. I really want to beat them. Only words I have for them are “be ready.”
