On November 12th, the basketball season here at Bob Jones began. With a new season come new challenges. Also, with a new season come new faces.
The girls have lost three key players (two upcoming seniors and one junior) from a season ago. All three transferred to Hazel Green High School. Now the Lady Patriots are adjusting to life without them. “We lost some height with their departure, but our team is very talented,” said senior guard and UAH commit, Chandler Elder.
Our girls are set to face a lot of competition this season. A few of the best teams they will play are Sparkman, Huntsville, and Hoover. The Lady Patriots, on the contrary, are not bothered by the competition. Instead, they want the Bob Jones community to stand behind them throughout the season. “I think a lot of people underestimate us. This season, we are going to turn some heads,” said senior Meredith Lovelady.
The boys’ team has made progress too. Specifically, the boys are more mature this season. Last season, the boys struggled with youth and lacked varsity game-time experience. Tanner Finley, last year’s captain, highlighted the obstacles the team faced last season and how they have improved for this season. “We were young last season, but this year we have seven seniors. Our expectations are much higher, especially with the addition of Josh Mitchell.”
Senior point guard, Josh Mitchell, returned to Bob Jones after playing a season with James Clemens. Mitchell is a key asset for the Patriots offense. “He knows how to effectively penetrate the lane. He breaks down the defense, allowing us to get open shots from the perimeter,” said Finley.
Mitchell says he is happy to be a part of the Patriots “brotherhood.” With the addition of Mitchell, the boys are determined to prove that Bob Jones is team to be reckoned with.
Varsity girls and boys will face off against the tigers of Grissom High School on November 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the big gym. Student tickets are only $2, so that student section better be rockin’!
