Gus Malzahn always says, “We find a way to win.” And that is exactly what the Auburn tigers did this past Saturday.
The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, as the Auburn vs. Georgia games are called, dates all the way back to 1892, when the first game between the two teams was played. This game is supposedly where Auburn’s battle cry, “War Eagle,” originated. Auburn won that game 10-0, and the two teams have played each other ever since (with the exception of three games because of World War I and World War II). Auburn leads the rivalry series record with 56 wins over Georgia’s 54 win.
“This was probably the craziest game I’ve ever seen in college football,” said Connor Cook, a junior at Bob Jones.
The game started off with Auburn leading Georgia 10 to 0 in the first quarter. Auburn continued to dominate the game, leading 34 to 17 after the 3rd quarter.
Down by 17, Georgia started the 4th quarter with a new game plan, and Auburn couldn’t seem to find a way to stop it.
The Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered points and led Auburn 38 to 37.
Dyrecus Lewis, a junior, said, “I had faith in Auburn and I knew they would clutch up and make something happen. “
There was 34 seconds left in the game, and Auburn had the ball on its own 25-yard-line on 4th and 18. Quarterback Nick Marshal, in desperation, threw it up, and wide receiver Ricardo Louis made a crazy catch off a tipped ball and scored the game-winning touchdown for Auburn.
“I was shocked!” said Taylor Decelle. “I ran through the house screaming. I couldn’t believe what I saw.”
Georgia fan and junior at James Clemens, Coby Butler, said, “The catch was totally unexpected, and my thoughts went every which way when he caught the ball off the tip.”
It was an absolutely crazy game. The Auburn win will be remembered.
