The Bob Jones Wrestling team’s season began with an auspicious start. On November 23, the team competed in its first tournament. The team placed first, competing against schools like Sparkman High School, Mountain Brook High School, and Buckhorn High School. On November 29, Bob Jones also won first place at the Scottsboro Dual, competing against Scottsboro High School, James Clemens High School, and Ridgeland High School. With the victory, the team improved its record to 6-1.
This year’s team features many newcomers and only a few veterans.
“We graduated the majority of our varsity from last year, so we’re really inexperienced, but we’re working hard to make up for it,” stated Collin Oliver, a junior on the team.
The Bob Jones Wrestling program has placed in the top ten of all schools in Alabama for the past eleven years. Four individual wrestlers from Bob Jones have won the individual state titles, and thirty-three Bob Jones wrestlers have won section championships. Five Bob Jones wrestlers have joined the ranks of All-Americans. The team has won over twenty Tournament Championships, including three AHSAA Section Championships.
Last year, the team finished in fifth place at state. Micah Hately and Jesse Webster reached the finals, and Levi Hickson, Alex Maxwell, and Melvin Gibbons reached the medal stand.
“I believe this year we will be in the top ten in state again,” said Collin Oliver.
David Gunther, a senior at Bob Jones, has attended a few wrestling tournaments. “It was exciting watching those guys. They are incredible athletes,” said David.
Help support the wrestling team and go to some of their competitions. Cheer the team on as it makes its way to the state competition.
