The 2013 SEC Championship took place on Saturday December 7. The game was between the two teams of tigers: Missouri and Auburn. No one expected these two teams to be competing for the SEC trophy. This was one of the most improbable championship games ever. With Auburn having a terrible season last year, losing against every SEC team that they faced, and Missouri having only recently joined the Southern Eastern Conference, these teams were certainly not expected to appear at the championship game. According to BCS votes, most fans expected to see Alabama and Georgia playing in the SEC championship game.
During the game both teams were scoring back to back. Auburn’s running formation couldn’t be stopped nor could Missouri’s passing. Neither of the teams’ defenses were able to stop each other’s offenses. So it was a matter of who could out-score the other when the time ran out. In the fourth quarter, Auburn managed to muster some good defense and was able to stop Missouri’s passing game and keep their lead as the final second left the timer. The score was 59-42 and now the Auburn Tigers are the 2013 SEC Champions! Their running back Tre Mason broke a few school records as well as SEC championship records. Mason rushed for over 300 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead his team to the win.
Matt Kuenzli a Bob Jones junior said,”Auburn is going all the way for the big win.” With Michigan State winning against Ohio State, Auburn will be heading to Pasadena, California to play Florida State in the National Championship game. Florida state is ranked number one and, with Heisman quarterback Jameis Winston at the helm, promises to be a formidable match for the Tigers. It looks like Auburn has their work cut out for them, but the seasons favorite underdog should give the Florida State team a run for their money.
