Rap music blares out of the Madison City School’s stadium. A sea of navy blue t-shirts only distinguished by red and light blue fill the concrete bleachers on the warm Tuesday evening. The players warm up, while both Madison varsity teams and their fans anxiously await the one football game-that is futbol game-where the outcome isn’t necessarily an obvious Bob Jones victory.
“We’re looking forward to a bit of redemption from the last game…the varsity boys are coming off of a victory at the Gulf Coast Classic, so this should be a good game,” says Mr. Campbell, the Boys soccer sponsor.
The last game Mr. Campbell is referring to is last year’s infamous James Clemens’ victory over Bob Jones, resulting in a morning announcement by Varsity player, Max Isper, encouraging the student body to come out to support the Patriots.
While the stadium was sparse compared to fall’s football games, some Bob Jones students did come out to support their soccer team.
“We have several friends on the team so we came out to support them. Plus, I like soccer,” says Kennedy Davis, Bob Jones freshman.
However, not all Madison City School students came out to support Bob Jones in the cross-town rivalry.
Former Bob Jones student and current James Clemens senior, Ala’a Abu-Spetani shared her excitement for her team loyalty. “[Go] Jets! That’s my school now.” Ala’a says.
She continued to say that she is “excited [about the game]…the last game went into penalty kicks, so it was very intense.”
Tuesday’s game did not lack intensity either.
The soccer game included everything from a rouge ball kicked into the stands by a James Clemens player and a first goal for the Bob Jones Patriots in the last 5 minutes of the first half by Eduvie Ikoba.
The game ended with a 2-0 victory for Bob Jones and a salute to the team’s seniors: Josh Evans, John Michael Weber, Matthew Trulock, Jack Patrick, Matt Van Scoy, Josh McManus, Tristan Samios, and Max Isper.
