Only Halfway through the Season, but Wrestling to the Top

Wresting had another big win for Bob Jones recently at the Scott Rohrer Invitational hosted by Hoover High School. Bob Jones senior Seth Dupree, weighing at 220 lbs, took first place and senior Harold Gilmore took third place. Dupree said, “The season so far is going to a great start and I think we are making Bob Jones proud.”  Bob Jones placed with seven out of eleven wrestlers and took fourth out of twenty-six teams from four different states.

Bob Jones has had a productive season. They took on the Fall Brawl where Bob Jones student Thomas Riley took first place, Collin Lee took second place, and Jaden Edward placed fourth. In other weight categories, Bob Jones placed five other students.

Bob Jones then took on the Hewitt Dual and defeated Tuscaloosa County 77-0. Then defeated Hewitt Trussville 49-18. Bob Jones continued the roll by defeating Oak Mountain 53-19. Finishing it all they ended the dual by beating Ola, Ga. 43-29. In the end, they placed second at the dual taking home the trophy.

After a big win at the Hewitt, Dual wrestlers got a break for Thanksgiving but were back at it the next Tuesday, Nov. 28, in Athens in which they took the win 64-9.

Bob Jones took on Huntsville high, a two-day tournament, and on day one they were in the lead by 69.5 points. Bob Jones placed first in the following weight classes: Kevin McGhaw, 120 lbs, Jimmy Wilson, 106 lbs, Cal Francovitch, 152 lbs, Gabe Pittman, 160 lbs, and George Francovitch, 182 lbs. The took first place out of thirty-eight other schools in the Huntsville Invitational.

Bob Jones was “back in action”  at The Swede Umbach Tournament in Auburn. They took the won on Auburn 45-31. They defeated Ridgeview (FL) 54-20, and keeping the streak they took Fort Walton Beach (FL) 77-6. Ending the tournament in the first place they defeated Lee County (GA) 64-10.

So far in the season, they had been victorious 7-1. Two separate teams went to two different events, the first team went to the Clint McCall Duals in Oxford and the other went to the Grappling in the Valley Invitational in Alexandria. In the Clint McCall Duals, the team took the win for the third year in a row. Nick Mothersele, Tye Jones, Hamza Dorsey, and Josh Guyton all placed at The Death Valley Invitational in Alexandria.

After the big win at Clint McCall Duals, Bob Jones headed to the Coosa River Clash and ended the first day in the lead with 387.0 points. Jimmy Wilson placed third in his weight class, Seth Dupree won in the 220 lbs, Caleb Lawson placed third at HWT, Jordan Whalen won first in the 145 lbs, Cal Francovitch took first in the 152 lbs, and ending it all, the team got the big win.

With four tournament wins in a row, and after a small holiday break, the team went to the Battlefield Duals with a 35-33 over Ola, Ga in the finals. Winning the Battlefield Duals added one more tournament underneath the champs belt, making it five in a row.  Bob Jones went into the weekend with an 18-1 dual record and a 2-0 dual region dual record.

Bob Jones is halfway through the season with tournaments the following dates:

  • Jan 11 at James Clemens
  • Jan 13 Regional Duals at Grissom
  • Jan 15 at Dick Clem Invitational
  • Jan 18 at Columbia Dual
  • Jan 19 and 25 are both the State Duals.
  • Feb 9 and 10 are AHSAA Sectionals.
  • Feb 16 and 17 are the AHSAA Tournaments.
