BJHS Girls’ Golf Team: A Chat with Coach Edge

Andrew Lundberg, Writer

The Girls’ Golf team at Bob Jones has been overlooked because it never seems to make enough waves. Well, not this year!

The team is training like crazy, with team-bonding exercises, rigorous physical activity, and fundraisers to prepare them for the season ahead. Its members are determined to see it through to the end and are building lasting friendships and skills to conquer the competition. Coach Edge said, “Golf is a game where you have the most to say about how good you want to be.  If you are willing to work hard and put in the time, you can achieve a very high level of success.  It also teaches so much about life.  Discipline, perseverance, resilience, confidence, hard work.  I don’t think there is another sport better than golf to prepare us for life.”

Coach Edge has a special connection with the team and sees coaching as a calling. “I never had an intention of coaching growing up, but on June 21st, 2013, I believed the Lord spoke to me (not audibly but I felt and heard it clearly in my mind) that He wanted me to sell my businesses and make a positive impact on the lives of young people.  I started volunteering at Bob Jones working with different sports team doing weekly character talks and leadership classes.  I then became the assistant boys golf coach and then the head girls coach this year.   So it has really been a path of trust & faith to this point.”

As for the golf season, Coach Edge has high hopes. “I am very excited.  I believe this group of girls want to play well and I enjoy teaching them the process that must be done to get there.  I have already seen a lot of personal growth in some of the girls!”
