Poirier vs. McGregor, pt. 2

Julia Wilhide, Writer

This Saturday, January 23, Poirier vs. McGregor 2, the enthusiastically awaited UFC match, will be going down. Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor will be having an intense fight to the win, each trying to prove themselves and their abilities. Part of the reason for excitement is that McGregor is coming back to the fighting scene, with his reputation and previous successes bringing a lot of fans and attention to the showdown. Another of the big draws for this match is that UFC fans are looking forward to seeing how Poirier stacks up against his opponent and in which ways the former has improved over the years. The match is classified as a lightweight match, unlike their last match, which was a featherweight match.

This being a rematch adds a lot more weight to it, as each likely wants to improve from last time. McGregor has a reputation to defend and Poirier wants to take the win this time around. When the two last faced off, it was 2014 and each were at very different points in their careers from where they are now. 7 years ago, the match with Poirier was pivotal to McGregor’s UFC career. McGregor or “Mystic Mac,” as he has gone by, received a lot of attention for the under two minute timeframe that his win against Poirier took. Poirier, or “The Diamond,” has said that he wants to redeem himself from this. With his accomplishments since last time, and his gained weight and talents, he may just be able to take McGregor down.

UFC 257 will be happening on Yas Island (or “Fight Island” as it’s called for these events) in Abu Dhabi. Due to health protocol, there will not be an audience present. An additional required rule for the event is that fighters pass COVID-19 testing before leaving their hotel rooms. There are 12 fights planned to take place during UFC 257, with both men’s and women’s matches included.

You can catch this event, January 23, on ESPN +. It will be starting at 8 pm and the Poirier vs. McGregor fight is at 10 pm (ET). If UFC is your thing, don’t miss out on this great event!
