“At That Pace You Will Make It To State.”
September 15, 2021
The girls’ cross country team is off to a great season.
As a member of the girls’ cross country team, I feel that the addition of the female coaches is an improvement. Last year, we did not have a coach dedicated to the girls’ team. Coach McIlwain is still the head coach of the team, but now he has additional help with the girls’ team.
With more leadership, the team is in a good place. Coach Smith said, “I was a cheer coach at DMS but knew nothing about it, so when I heard they were looking for a girls coach, I said that I would do it since I ran in school.” Coach Carter ran at Bob Jones before graduating and is now a college student at UAH and coach. The girls’ student captain is Jillian Pennell.
The girls have never made it to state as a team, though they have made it to sectionals. Only individuals girls have made it to state. With twenty-three hard-working, dedicated female athletes and the new coaches guiding them, our girls’ cross team is headed in the right direction to maybe making it to state as a team this year.
