Greenpower USA is a STEM organization where students get the ability to build and race single seat electric cars. This past weekend, our Bob Jones Greenpower team headed to the Talladega Speedway for their 8th national championship, May 3rd-4th. To qualify, they had to attend four races this whole season. Any Greenpower race is composed of two parts: a presentation (50 points) and the race (50 points).
In Talladega, their Red car had some complications in the first heat, which left them out for about 20 minutes. They worked very hard and got back on the track, but sadly they were still down. Their Blue and White cars ended up doing very well. In the second heat, the Red car made a huge comeback and beat the Blue car.
Overall, their Red car (#5) was named the F24 Advanced Modified 2024 National Champion, their Blue car (#1) placed Runner Up. The White car (#15) competed in a different division, Custom, and placed F24 advanced Custom 2024 National Champion. Custom division means the car was scratch built and Modified division means the car has a stock frame.
One member on the team, Isa Hayes, was asked a few questions about the team and how she felt about this year overall.
How far have y’all come since the beginning of the year until now?
“We have come super far! Each year is a challenge as we try and work through the learning curves every race throws us. White team had built an entire new car over the summer, so it took some time to figure out how to get it to run just how we wanted.”
What are some things you all do on the team to help y’all work together well?
“Communication is something super duper important! With how our team operates, it’s super important to keep everyone up to date with what is being changed on the cars!”
How do you feel about this year overall?
“I feel so amazing about this year. I’ve been in this program for the past eight years and on Patriot Racing for the last four. I couldn’t have asked for a better senior season.”
