It’s safe to say that the recruiting trip the cross country (XC) team undertook on Wednesday reaped rewards.
Over 40(!) middle-schoolers decided that they were, in fact, wolves in the making, and decided to try out for the XC team. Those 40+ braved tough heat and a slightly long course to post a qualifying time; many posted impressive times. Micah Meeker (rising 8th, JMS) finished first among the JV, running a 6:05 (Likely ~5:50 on an accurate course), and finishing 20 seconds faster than the next runner. With the tryout completed, all of those middle-schoolers are now officially wolf pups.
In addition to the many middle-schoolers who were brave enough to join XC, many high-schoolers decided to show up as well. One of those high-schoolers, Liam, Culver (rising 12th), had this to say about his experience at the tryout:
“The most fun part of the tryouts was the one mile run because I got to see how fast I can run, but the worst part about the tryouts was also the one mile run because it was difficult.”
Ah yes, the duality of XC. Why is it great? Running. Why is it terrible? Running. Nonetheless, Culver is excited for this upcoming season.
“I think XC will be an enjoyable experience because I like running and have several friends on the team.”
Many runners share Culver’s sentiment, and are restlessly waiting until unofficial practice starts on June 3rd.
