It could be coincidence, or it could be the warm air coming from the gulf mixing with the cool air flowing off the Appalachian Foothills, but every time we’ve been to Scottsboro for a race, the area is under extreme fog. This time was an exception, however: we were met with stormy skies. Thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Helene, Scottsboro was struck with bands upon bands of moderate rain.
This may be a good time to mention the utter destruction Hurricane Helene caused in other parts of the country, particularly in Georgia and North Carolina. Entire communities were devastated, and the BJ XC team sends its condolences to anyone affected by the storm.
Moving along, the Scottsboro course is atypical. The JV course is long, while the 5K course is a bit short. Thus, many of the JV runners were highly encouraged to run the 5K for this race. Given that the race was the first weekend of fall break, many of our runners, including myself, were out-of-town.

WEATHER: Miserable. WIND: ??? (Wasn’t there, remember)
Analysis:
Given that Scottsboro is such a good 5K course, PRs were expected, and boy did the team deliver. 9 out of our first 11 runners ran a PR, and Cooke PR’d by almost a minute. As for the poor team scores, that can be excused by the fact that several of our top runners are on vacation – but for the runners who were there, this was a great performance.

WEATHER: Even more miserable. Wind: ???
Analysis:
Yeah this course definitely isn’t two miles, it may not even be 2.1. When factoring in for the weather and the long course, these times aren’t too bad at all. To get “accurate” times, I’d say subtract 45 seconds (if not more) from each individual’s total. Like with the varsity, the JV had a lot of runners missing due to vacation. In addition, many of the JV defected to the 5K, compounding their problems.
End of Results
The overall winner of the 5K was Bryce McCleary of Hazel Green, with a time of 15:16.89.
