After a very successful and fun season, the flag football season has ended. After many wins and minimal losses, the girls make it to the “Sweet 16” in the playoffs! As they faced Hewitt-Trussville on November 12th in the second round of playoffs, they played a hard and good game, unable to pull out the win. But on a positive note, they were the first group of Bob Jones girls to make playoffs, even better second round, in Bob Jones Flag Football history!
After interviewing a few players, Claire Strother, Kourtney Dunham, and Katie Nguyen, we are now able to better understand how the team worked, their strengths and weaknesses, and how the chemistry was between all of the girls. Starting with offense, I asked Kourtney Dunham what she thought the strengths and weaknesses were, and she stated, “I think our strengths were our good running game and blocking skills, and our weaknesses were our creativity in our throwing plays as well as our directional and field awareness when running routes.” Considering that the offense’s whole goal is to make it to the other team’s endzone and that was one of Bob Jones’s strengths. This shows how much the team worked on their strategy behind getting to the endzone.
Moving onto the strengths and weaknesses of the defense, this is what Claire Strother had to say: “The defense struggled sometimes with tracking other teams’ complex plays, but the strengths were that they would work together to cover each other and use the faster players to snatch the flags of the opposing team.”
Lastly, what is a vital characteristic a leader on the team must have? What was the chemistry like on this team? Thanks to Katie Nguyen, we have that answer. “I would say a characteristic was perseverance because no matter how much time we had left on the clock, that would really motivate us to keep playing our best and keep our hopes up, allowing us to win. There were definitely games where it was down to the last minute for us to win, so being able to persevere through negative mindsets allowed us to play to the best of our ability and took us far! Also, the chemistry on the team was amazing, everyone got along really well and no matter how long you have been playing everyone felt like they could talk to anyone on the team.”
Team chemistry is a SUPER important thing for any team. If a team isn’t on the same page or argues all of the time, then they won’t be successful in the game. Congrats to Flag Football for making history!
