The question “what’s for lunch?” never seems to cross the mind of countless students at Bob Jones High School. There are only two possibilities, chicken or something many are unable to identify. The daredevils that actually try the barely edible mysteries wouldn’t even be able to figure out which obscurities were being served.
“It’s very redundant, the chicken every day thing is what made me start bringing my lunch from home,” student Rachel Bryan pointed out.
Finding the lunch menu is a total scavenger hunt for the average teen. It is not announced daily like at other schools nor is it available on the Bob Jones website. There is one hidden on the Madison City School’s website buried under Child Nutrition and Menus and Prices, although it is almost always inaccurate.
The problem for some is, the nutrition of the food they are consuming is very important to them. “I don’t eat from the cafeteria because I am a strict vegetarian and almost everything served has some sort of questionable meat in it. Anything and everything is unhealthy,” student Kat Cox complained.
The bottom line is we really don’t know what the ingredients are. After reading on Wikipedia about the “pink slime” being used in school lunches, we should all be fairly hesitant.
Blaming the school’s hardworking lunch staff would be cruel and just plain ignorant. They don’t pick and choose what is being provided to students. They simply prepare what they are instructed to serve. The only ones to blame in this situation is ourselves for remaining silent and putting whatever they give us into the only body we’ll ever have. It’s hard to believe that there’s no food available other than chicken and slop. The entire school lunch system needs to be reevaluated and improved.
