The math team—or “math squad” as Mr. Parker is so fond of calling them—is comprised of an elite group of “mathletes” who travel all over the state solving the problems of the universe and battling against their arch enemy, Vestavia.
Training for these noble warriors begins with the rise of the sun on Wednesday mornings and promptly after school on Thursday. Brows furrowed in concentration, the team struggles over problems that are either displayed on the interactive board, in Edmodo battles, or by simply reviewing the tests of old.
For the first time since their conception, the Bob Jones math team has successfully placed in all of the competitions hosted by National Assessment and Testing, asserting their mathematical dominance over the nation. Lead by Dennis Dergunov, Olivia McCoy, Victoria Van, and Chan Lee, the team excelled, securing 23rd place this November. One of these polished mathletes, Victoria Van, placed 21st individually. Not satisfied with just this success, the team pushed forward, and placed 22nd in the Fall Startup Event.
How exactly did they accomplish this feat? By mastering the different styles of competition—team scramble, individual competition, and various ciphering rounds—the mathletes were able to fight their way to the top.
“Every competition is different,” comments math squad leader, Mrs. Cox.
But placing isn’t the only reward that mathletes seek. Martin Wang, Claire Zhang, Yoo-Jung Yang, Cody Wheeler, Megan Carter, Vi Dang, and Tins Tian even managed to answer over forty questions in thirty minutes with ease, once again displaying the math prowess held by the Bob Jones math team.
