The new dress code rules at Bob Jones, which includes an update of the policy against unnatural hair colors, have caused mixed reactions among the students. Many students celebrate their new freedoms, but is the school board starting on a slippery slope towards anarchy?
If you want to dye your hair an unnatural color, or any color at all, you are now allowed to do so, due to the approval by the Madison City school board. The new dress code rules also allow tights to be worn, as long as the shirt or skirt is an appropriate length. Although there are some amendments, sweatpants, jeans with holes, athletic shorts and some piercings remain prohibited for now.
I interviewed a couple of 9th grade students at Bob Jones about the unnatural hair color policy. The first student said she doesn’t mind the changes because she doesn’t dye her hair. The other student is happy with the change because she feels that it allows students to shape their appearance in such a way that will reflect their individual style. These are turbulent times for Madison City Schools, with the addition of a new high school and city-wide remodeling, and the rules are ripe for reform. Doubtlessly, sabers are being rattled at central office, and more changes will likely come down the pipe.
