When you hear “ELL” or “ESL” classes do you know what it is? ELL stands for English Language Learner and ESL stands for English Second Language. Basically, the classes help students from foreign countries that are still not fluent with English.
Bob Jones has very good courses that can help all ELL/ESL students. The program offers classes such as ESL English, ELL Reading for Success, and ELL Newcomer Orientation. These classes are design to help students adjust to the English language and life in America. “[The students] have time to help each other. In some countries the education is different. The education is higher than what I had in South America,” Emmy Him said.
Bob Jones not only have the best programs, Mrs. Sharon Thompson, our ELL/ESL teacher is the best too. Thompson goes above and beyond, often reaching outside of the classroom to help her students. EL students can depend on her support.
“In the other class we don’t have the time to study or learn conversation and communicate. I’m not good at speaking and writing, so this class helps me with basic reading and grammar,” Kensei Kikuchi said.
Most of the ELL/ESL students have a translator to help them study. Some people might think it is an electronic toy like PSP or others; most don’t know it is a source that can help foreign students understand the English text.
All ELL/ESL students also need to take an ACCESS for ELLs, Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners, exam each year to check if they are ready to pass on to a regular course. “This standardized test is given each year to ensure that the students are making progress,” Mrs. Thompson said.
Help foreign students or newcomers as much as possible, not only to show that you’re friendly but also to confirm that they made the right choice in joining the Patriots.
