On September 16th, 2013, a mock mini-college fair took place outside the Bob Jones auditorium. The college fair was presented by Coach Caleb Rogers’ career prep class. Ninth and tenth graders were placed in groups and were told to pick a college of their choice. The students had to make a presentation informing the spectators about everything from ACT scores to dorm standards.
When Coach Bourque’s math class came to the mock mini fair, the students received a small survey to rate how well the presenting students showcased their colleges to fellow Bob Jones students. The survey sheet asked the visiting students to judge the groups on areas such as confidence, information and interest.
Students presenting Brigham Young College were happy to start planning their future and getting to work on what to expect of college life. Unlike many school projects, the students had fun while preparing their presentations.
Although the ninth and tenth grade students enjoyed this new class, some think a career prep class would suit upperclassmen better.
“I think that the most important year to take a college prep class is eleventh grade because that’s when you first take the ACT and start thinking about the colleges you’re going to apply to,” comments senior, Casey Marley.
If lowerclassmen chose required classes that they needed in order to graduate, they could focus on college and potential careers when they get to be juniors and seniors. Perhaps next year the career prep class will be advertised to juniors and seniors, whose futures are imminent.
Although the career prep class would suit upperclassmen better, the existing students did very well on presenting their colleges to their fellow students. Coach Rogers and the rest of the class is optimistic about the rest of the semester.
