Camo gear, cowboy boots, and overalls galore! Monday was the first day of BJHS’s Spirit Week. In honor of the Bob Jones versus Sparkman homecoming football game this Friday, the students of Bob Jones dressed in what they believe to be Sparkman’s “everyday attire.” Bob Jones calls this “Hick Day.”
Hick Day encourages students to dress like stereotypical “rednecks.”
Katie Ryan explains,”I like Hick Day because it kinda represents the South. We wear camo like hunters because a majority of the South are hunters, and they are stereotyped to be hicks and rednecks. Its just a fun day to be over-dramatic and dress up.”
Some question whether the school district should allow days like Hick Day, which require students to recognize and then imitate stereotypes.
Senior Shelby Morgan disagrees. She explains,”Hick Day works because it’s all done in good fun. We all know that it’s a joke, and that we just like to tease each other. No one honestly thinks Sparkman is just a bunch of hicks. This is just a way to rile up the competition a bit and get students excited for the homecoming game.”
