Senioritis. There’s no denying it. As the end of their senior year approaches, Bob Jones seniors are readying themselves for college.
But are the Bob Jones seniors ready for college? Do they have what it takes? How have they prepared themselves?
Some already have their plans down. Sascha Kirkham, one such senior, says, “I am ready for college and have been accepted into the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.”
Some seniors probably aren’t worried much about college because of the A.P. courses they’ve been taking. These challenging courses are made to help prepare students for college. They’re definitely big in helping students get used to the feel of college classes. Ben Ewing, a senior doing dual enrollment, says, “The college format differs from high school more than anyone may think. Even dual enrolling at a community college provides a nice intermediate between the two.”
Even electives can be challenging and important in determining a student’s college plans. For example, some elective classes are apart of the Medical Academy. They can offer real world experience through internships and encouragement from guest speakers.
Still, not many seniors can say they have already applied and been accepted into a college. There are many high school graduates that wait until the last minute to make college plans. If you’re apart of that group, it’s okay. The Bob Jones counselors are here to help.
Mrs. Pam Hendrix, one of the counselors, says that the counseling department helps student prepare for college in the following ways: they suggest which college admission tests to take and when to take them, advise on ‘’safety,” “probable” and “reach” colleges, encourage students to participate in community service and extracurricular activities, and publish information on colleges, scholarships, financial aid, careers, college athletics, military academies, ROTC information, military aid, summer programs, ACT/SAT/PSAT testing all on the BJHS website.
The biggest step to take in order to get seniors ready for college is to take the ACT and SAT and make good scores. Seniors should improve on the areas they need or want help in. Finally, they really should have some plan in place. So, with help or on your own, prepare for the next chapter in your lives, seniors!
