It’s October. You spy a large, blue van covered with clouds and decked with the words, “Velociraptor season is here. Are you prepared?” What does this mean? It means that the The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention is attempting to educate you on the dangers of the animals and the precautions you should take to save your skin.
Why October? October is National Raptor month.
Raptors are known as birds of prey. They are characterized as birds that hunt and kill other animals. Birds of prey include owls, hawks, osprey and other talon clad birds. During October in Great Britain, many people celebrate falconry and monitor the killings of birds by cats. Another example of humans rejoicing their avian friends is International Migratory Bird Day, which falls on October 12th.
Velociraptors captivate our attention. Most people, like Sada Forrest, a student at Bob Jones, think solely of Velociraptors when they hear about Raptor Awareness Month. Many can even describe the characteristics of Velociraptors. According to Savannah Nichols, a freshman at Bob Jones, the Velociraptor is “scaly.” It is “the [dinosaur] with the big claw on his foot.” In fact, when Mr. Duvall and his Physics Club students were choosing which t-shirt would represent their club, an idea involving a Velociraptor contended fiercely in the vote.
The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention has a different take on the publicity the dinosaur is getting. As posted by the organization, Velociraptor attack is “the third leading cause of death for men of the ages 27 to 29.” The organization warns against Velociraptors and their attacks.
As deadly as these creatures are, Velociraptors are less than three feet tall, and contrary to representations of the animal on the Jurassic Park movies, Velociraptors used to be covered with feathers.
The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention documents that the dinosaurs can accelerate at up to 4 m/s2 and reach speeds of 25 m/s!
Three more traits make Velociraptors the deadly monsters they are:
First, the animals have a single sickle-shaped claw that can grow to be up to 2.6 inches. They use it to tear their prey and deliver deathblows.
Second, Velociraptors can open doors in five minutes or less.
Third, they have no fear.
Want to know something even more terrifying? The fact that Velociraptors boast feathers indicates that the animals could possibly fly. Although Velociraptors have since lost their feathers, no one knows when they may grow them again.
Who knows? The zombie apocalypse may be eaten by the Velociraptor apocalypse.
