Considering the occupational demographics of the Madison County area, it comes as no surprise that Bob Jones has a thriving science and technology department. One of the most exciting technological clubs at the school is the Bob Jones robotics team, which is preparing to bring a robot of its own construction to competition on October 26th at Calhoun Community College in Tanner, Alabama.
The team has assembled and programed a robot to the specifications of BEST(Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics, an organization which has challenged teams from high schools and middle schools across the country to construct robots capable of automatically assembling a computer. In addition to being judged on the performance of their robot, the members of the team are expected to build a mock company around their “product,” receiving points for marketing and a trade-show style presentation.
“(The Robotics Team) allows students to put what they have already learned to practical use,” says Bob Jones student Austin Butler.
To raise money for the competition, the team will be selling Gigi’s cupcakes in the cafeteria before and after school, and in front of the library during break for five dollars. All cupcakes will be delivered on Halloween to you or a friend of your choosing. Cupcakes may be sent anonymously from “secret admirers” for an additional dollar. All proceeds will help the Bob Jones robotics squad succeed in competition.
