It is most likely known state-wide that Bob Jones High School is a competitive school. If there is ever an opportunity to assert our academic dominance over others, out of obligation to Principal Robby Parker himself, we must take it. Such an opportunity has presented itself in the form of the Tennessee Valley Historical Society’s History Scholarship Competition.
The competition is open to all juniors and seniors in the school. The grand prize is a one-time scholarship for $750. As any future or present college student will tell you, any scholarship is a good scholarship.
The grand prize will be awarded to the senior with the highest score on a written test that all competitors will take. The Second Prize of $500 goes to the senior with the second highest score and the junior with the highest score will be awarded a $250 to attend the University of North Alabama (UNA) where the competition will be held.
The competition will be held on Friday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m on UNA’s campus in Florence, Ala. Bus transportation to and from Florence will be provided for the students.
Although many students aren’t aware that this competition is happening, once informed, Bob Jones High School student Erin Anderson showed definite interest in it. “Oh Definitely! Scholarships are your best friends!”
National Merit Finalist, Mugdha Mokashi also showed an interest in participating and said that she may even have a shot at winning. “History is a favorite of mine, and I’ve been involved in many competitive history/politics-related teams.”
Mokashi says she learned about the competition through, Mr. Jonathan Wrights, an Advanced Placement (AP) Government teacher at Bob Jones. She suggested, however, that the Social Studies Honor Society, a group associated with the competition, advertise the opportunity more through an announcement or through NotifyMe.
The competition is roughly two weeks away so anyone wishing to compete should be prompt about notifying either Mrs. Nelda Newell or Mrs. Leah Faris about getting a permission slip. The written test could cover anything from Early and Modern U.S. History to World History. We wish the best of luck to anyone competing!
