It’s no secret that competition season for the artists of the school is here. Everyone is competing for scholarships and filling out all the forms they can get their paint covered hands on. One contender, senior Tori Lewis, won the congressional art competition.
All seven congressmen from Alabama chose a winner from the entries submitted from their district. Mo Brooks, our congressman, chose Tori’s hyper realistic charcoal portrait entitled “Carl,” after the character in Pixar’s hit movie Up. It will hang in Washington D.C until next years competition.
She said, “I’m shocked but so excited,” of her winning.
She started art classes here at Bob Jones this year (after taking a large amount of AP classes the previous year) in order to further expand her horizons, becoming a perfect example of the “well-rounded” student, colleges are ravenous for.
Mrs. Norton, her teacher for both of her Art I and Art II classes, said, “Tori is a fantastic art student and an even greater young lady. Her charcoal portrait is exceptional! She captured the essence of the old man very well. She manipulated the charcoal just right to give the illusion of soft, course, rough, and even hairy textures! I am so proud that Tori received this award, it is such a great honor.”
Having done “Carl” as her last project in Art I and inspired by Mrs. Norton and the Congressional Award, Tori applied to SCAD (Savanna College of Art and Design) in Georgia and is still in the admissions process. If that doesn’t work out, she will pursue her art as a minor at Auburn University this fall.
