Rainbow Mountain is about to get a Little Shinier
As the end of the year quickly approaches, students are feeling more and more stressed over looming finals and deadlines. However, students do have a way to decompress while supporting a “good cause”. This Saturday, April 26, join senior Morgan Pennington and the Environmental Club on Rainbow Mountain for a celebration of Earth Day. Volunteers will meet at 10:00 with the rest of the club members to use the supplies given by Madison City to clean up the mountain.
Morgan started the Environmental Club with sponsor Mr. Ames, the Marine Biology teacher, as sponsor, after taking AP Environmental Science.
“When I took [the class], I realized that our society can’t sustain itself in the future the way we are living, and that the exploitation of our resources and our planet is not okay,” said Morgan.
The Environmental Club has come to the rescue to make it “okay”. The club was formed in order to educate students about the environment without the commitment of taking a science class. The club acts as a volunteer program; students can help the Earth, spark an interest in activism, and spend time outdoors.
She said, “I’ve had a strong passion towards nature since I was young and once I learned more about what’s up with the planet it kind of sparked more interest in me.”
44 years ago 20 million Americans celebrated the first Earth Day, this year over 1 billion people world-wide are pulling out their gardening shoes and getting to work. It doesn’t take much effort to make a big impact.
According to Solar Energy World , “For every ton of paper that is recycled, saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil, 4,100 kilowatts of energy, 3.2 cubic yards of landfill waste, and 60 pounds of pollution” It’s just as easy to throw paper in the recycling bin as the trash can.
