With graduation just around the corner, many seniors are finalizing their college choices.
Though many factors were considered when deciding which college to attend. Many seniors find themselves falling back to one common idea.
Money. College is expensive, even community colleges such as Calhoun and UAH can be a struggle to finance if the student in question wishes to be a “full time student”.
“For my senior year, I decided to dual enroll and take a class at Calhoun,” Kayla Rocha, a Bob Jones senior explains. “Even for just one class, by the end of all the payments for my book, class and supplies, I had to pay close to $550. For just one class!”
If the prices for a community college is ridiculous, than the price of a higher university such as Auburn or Alabama is truly something to be wary of.
According to auburn.edu, the cost of in-state tuition for a full time student is close to $30,000 for one year. That is not including emergencies such as doctor visits or car repairs.
So what can be done about the cost? The simplest solution is to apply for scholarships and grants. And a lot of them. Taking time to search the web for available scholarships is the first step to avoid drowning in college debt.
Sites such as scholarship.com and mycollegeoptions.org can help many students searching for a scholarship. Both can help to narrow down options to help find the perfect scholarship for each student.
Bob Jones students can even stop by the Media Center and speak with college and career councilor, Ms. Roberts. Helping students find scholarships is her main job.
A few tips for scholarship searching are to start early. According to abcNews.com, there are many scholarships that are only given to juniors. Starting early can give you a chance for these.
Another tip is to apply to all scholarships you can, even if you don’t think you would win. You don’t need a 30 on your ACT to win a scholarship.
