Behind the Dream: Techies

Krissy Decker and Kiara Gunn

Without them the show does not go on. They create what our imagination thinks of. Who do we need? More like what do we need. The techies.

“Tech is important to our shows. They help bring alive the production we show. They build the set, manage things backstage, run the lights, and play the sound needed for one show. With the show, Standard Deviation, we won best set.Tech can be stressful at times but it is always a ball of fun,” states Mr. B. Dwayne Craft, who is one of the drama teachers here at Bob Jones. He has been teaching theater for nineteen years now. He teaches advanced production, advanced drama, and technical theater. “For me to have an idea of what I want to write, I have to imagine what the set will look like. Usually, I’ll get a gist of what I want it to look like and then once the play is written I just go along with my ideas and make them come alive and more likely once built.”

The techies. What are the techies? They help with technical design. They build sets, help with lights, they bring the production to life.

“Tech is basically one productive team because teamwork makes the dream work,” states Sierra Anderson, who has been apart of tech for three years.

The techies are known for their technical skill and have the awards to prove it. They have won best set design at SETC multiple years in a row. “I personally think the best set we have ever built was Standard Deviation. I mean, we had moving gears,” states Jacob Franks.

“There are so many advantages to working as a techie. You have to learn how to put wires together, how to use drills and saws. Basically you are becoming a technician, which is pretty cool,” says Liam Crowe.

Once the audience understands what is happening behind the scenes, they can appreciate the show even more.
