This fall the Bob Jones Math Team placed 6th in the nation in the Fall Startup. The Fall Startup is a contest in which students have 30 minutes to answer 100 math problems. Bob Jones had seven students placing in the top one hundred places with Joey Lee in 1st, Tony Tian in 12th, Winston Van in 16th, Aditi Limaye in 20th, David Li in 23rd, and Alan Grissom in 24th. Though the average was higher than 60 points, Joey won first place with 95 correct questions.

Tony Tian, the top placing Bob Jones High School freshman who got a score of 75 points, said, “[The questions] were somewhat average in difficulty, possibly a bit harder than the previous years.” He also stated that “[he] could have done better concerning accuracy [and his speed].”

Joey Lee, the top scoring junior in the nation with 95 point, agreed with Tony, adding, “There were a few oddball [problems] that made it hard to get a top score”.

Wenli Mu, as senior who scored 45 points, was of the same opinion stating, “ I would have done better if I had more time.

Daniel Li, a junior who made 37 points, on the other hand stated, “I don’t think I could have done much better.”

The math team has competed in this competition for the past four years now, and for the past three years, they have placed in the top 20 schools nationwide of the schools that participated in this competition.

When asked about what the Fall Startup covered, students like Shantanu Kadan, a sophomore who scored 75 points said, “It covers everything in high school.”

Other students like freshman Aditi Limaye, with 67 points, agreed. “It covered everything in high school, but a few questions caught me off guard.”

All in all this is an exciting start to the year. The math team is looking forward to future tournaments and victories. Their next tournament is Nov 5, the Team Scramble tournament.  The Math Team is under the direction of Mrs. Cox.
