Crochet or Knit Club

Natacha Smith, Writer

Have you ever wanted to learn how to crochet or knit?

The crochet club located in B105 (Mrs. Faris’ room) is the place to go. All levels of experience are welcome. The presidents of the club, Claudia Chu and Amelia Goldston, teach basic crocheting and knitting skills to get you started on fun projects such as blankets.

Every Thursday, members can help one another to work on their skills without needing to worry about not being able to get supplies. The club is mostly bring your own hook since it receives some donations of yarn. The only other beginning supplies you need are crochet scissors.

The crochet club does many activities for charity. You may remember the crochet roses they were selling last year for Valentine’s day. They donated the money they made from the sales to the photography club here at Bob Jones for new equipment and also last year, they donated ear warmers to Knots of Love. They plan to take on similar enterprises this year along with selling different creations during football games and at lunch.

Co-President and senior Claudia Chu said, “The crochet club is great community service and doesn’t just benefit yourself, the deeper meaning is to help and give to others. No experience is necessary, and it is never too late to learn.”

The second co-president Amelia (also a senior) said, “It’s practical and relaxing.” They and other members expressed that crocheting is not just for old people. It is fun for anyone to enjoy.

If you have an interest in crocheting or knitting and want to continue at home as a hobby or even a career, you can get your supplies at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and Joann’s. These stores and many others have basic materials to help you on your way to a successful hobby. Websites such as Etsy are a great way to get your work out there and get money out of it, too!

In recent crochet news, a crocheting Pokemon Go player makes mini Pokemon and hides them at Pokestops for players to find. The project is known as CrochetGo. If also interested in joining, visit the page and crochet a Pokemon of your choice for someone else to find!

Still having doubts? Just think about how cheap and easy it is. As Claudia said, it’s really never too late to learn. So everyone keep your eyes open when hunting, and don’t forget to come to any future meetings on Thursdays. Hope to see you there. Also check out their Instagram to see some of their works.
