Like Problem Solving, Try Math Team
April 11, 2017
Many students at Bob Jones High School are devoted members of various teams and organizations, but many may not know much about the Bob Jones Math Team that are active competitors in the academic world.
The team led by Mrs.Cox, a math teacher at Bob Jones, meets once a week until 5pm during the school year to prepare for competitions that test the students on geometry and algebra two. Students also take comprehensive tests which are comprised of pre-calculus and higher advanced math.
When competing, members of the team will meet after school and either answer questions on timed tests or take tests that will be scored in a certain way. These tests are then submitted to scoring and the students can find out how they compare to other people on their team and to other students across the region and globe.
Andy Nguyen, a freshman on the math team, commented, “I’ve been apart of the math team for about four years, and throughout those four years it’s been a great learning experience [and] I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. The best part of being on the math team is that you can expand on your math knowledge. Instead of simply knowing how to do something, you find out the “why” of the concept.”
Participating in this activity can not only greatly benefit your future but also uplift your high school experience. Many colleges provide scholarships for winning awards and competitions through the math team. Being a part of the math team can greatly help your ACT and SAT scores by helping a student understand the full concept behind a problem.
Aditi Limaye stated, “It’s a family. You have fun meeting people with a love for problem-solving [and] you learn how to work hard and think critically.”
