Let’s Celebrate the Earth

Brittany Thomas, Writer

Earth Day is a annual event that is celebrated on April 22nd. This day was created in 1970,by senator Gaylord Nelson, as a day to celebrate the Earth and support the environment. It is now celebrated in 180 countries around the world. It is the 48th anniversary.
In our community, students can participate in various Earth Day activities. From picking up trash alongside the road to gardening, there are many things students can do to take part in Earth Day. Huntsville’s Operation Green Team organized a birding hike and butterfly releases on Saturday, April 21 at Hays Nature Preserve. This is a free event. Lowe Mill will also have activities at its community garden on Saturday, April 21 and it’s also free.
Though Earth Day falls on a Sunday this year, many Bob Jones would like to participate in Earth Day activities here at school. Recently, the English Honor Society organized a creative writing contest for Earth Day, but surveyed students want more. 78% said that we should be more informed and excited about Earth Day. They suggested activities like planting trees and flowers, cleaning up trash around the campus, creating jewelry with recycled materials, or just going outside to enjoy nature

Jacquelyn Dub, a freshman, said, “We should do something outside during the week of Earth Day instead of sitting in the classrooms all day.”
