How to Have Fun at Prom

Ella Waddell, Writer

Every year students jump on the hype train to prom and end up with their glamorous Disney dreams crushed. With such high expectations given to us by High School Musical and Footloose, it’s easy to get lost in the well-choreographed dance numbers and completely forget the fact that Prom itself isn’t fun. It is the events leading up to Prom that make it worthwhile. As prom is coming up on April 14, it is important to have a list of things that you should do in order to have fun on Prom night.

1. Go in a group
Spending the night alone with your date can be fun, but for most people, it can get really awkward after the third hour when you have used up all of your conversation starters. Going in a group allows you to take a break once and a while and talk to other people. Another tip is to make these groups as early as you can so you can make dinner reservations in advance. Nothing is more stressful than trying to get a table at Conner’s for twelve three days before an event.

2. Make your own playlist
It is no secret that school dances usually do not cater to a wide variety of music preferences. There are two groups: the people who know what song is playing and those who only know the “Cupid Shuffle”. Most students fall into that second group. After taking a survey, it was found that only about 3/20 students listen to the genres that are played the most at Prom.

When asked about whether or not the music chosen represented a large majority of the student population, Bob Jones senior, Ginny Ginge, commented, “it did not really have a lot of variation. It was a lot of rap and stuff like that, but there wasn’t really anything else.”

For the remaining students, it is best to make your own playlist to listen to when getting ready and driving to Prom. This way, you can avoid the disappointment of not hearing one good song all night.

3. Eat somewhere fun
Generally, when people think of a Prom restaurant, they think of someplace like Conners or Texas De Brazil; however, those places usually fill up quickly and are really expensive. How about instead of going to a restaurant that costs $40 just for a glass of water, you go to restaurants that you know you will have a good time at.
I would highly recommend places like Kona Grill or Toy Box Bistro. Though they may not be the fanciest places, these restaurants will definitely make the night memorable.

4. Wear something reasonable
It is fun to don on fancy threads, but sometimes people attending Prom can go a bit overboard. Remember that you will spend about six hours in whatever outfit you choose. Ladies, make sure you do not wear something that is too tight. You will regret it later. But what if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a Prom dress? Have no fear because Mrs. Murray is selling Prom dresses at a discounted price. Also, remember to bring an extra pair of shoes or band-aids if you are wearing heels. Gentlemen, pay attention to the materials your tuxes are made out of. Choose something made from a lighter fabric so you do not overheat.

5. Make sure you have your tickets!

You can pay for your tickets through the online school fee payment system for $50. Tickets will not be available at the door so it is important to get them before the event. Contact Mrs. Murray or Mrs. Williams for any questions.
