Mental Health is so complex and difficult to wrap our heads around. It is important to recognize the people who are always willing to give up their time and advice to those who need it, our counselors here at Bob Jones.
Mental health is so important to be in touch with as a person and student. Counselor Cedric Delbridge stated, “The mind is really the center and seat of everything we do. When our minds are not healthy, it can negatively impact every other area of our lives. In high school, students have so much going to include changes in hormones, learning to navigate relationships, family stuff, finding balance between fun and academics, peer pressure, and if they are athletes or participate in extracurricular activities, that’s an additional something to try to manage. Sometimes, those things can be overwhelming and can affect one’s mental health, and without effective ways to cope or a good support system one’s mental health could suffer and affect every other area.” It may not seem like struggling mental health could affect much, but it can affect every aspect of your day-to-day life.
Because mental health is so hard to comprehend, it can be hard to find people who understand or want to help. Lucky for us students here at Bob Jones, we have great counselors willing to be here with you and help with your mental health.
BJ counselor Cedric Delbridge explained why he became a counselor. “When I was a teacher, I used to address this with my students and found joy in helping them navigate some of the struggles/problems they were facing. It was nice to be a listening ear for those who may not have had that. That truly was my motivation to become a school counselor. I also realized the need for more males in this role, so that also influenced my decision. Students need someone who genuinely cares to help them navigate the barrage of things life can throw their way, and I enjoy helping them do that.”
With people as passionate and caring of others as our counselors, mental health can become something that people are not scared or embarrassed of.
Our counselors, including our enrichment counselor Ryann Taylor, are always open to talk. Many students would not be able to learn how to open up with their emotions or recognize their feelings without their help.
