World Kindness Week
Weltkindliche Woche
世界仁慈周
People celebrate this week all around the world. The National Day Website stated it was started by the World Kindness Movement at a 1998 Tokyo conference. The week was meant to empathize good will, but it shines a spotlight on how we require a week to congratulate ourselves for being kind to someone. But shouldn’t we be kind every day?
Shouldn’t it be a part of our daily lives? It’s just a simple action like complimenting someone’s outfit. By praising ourselves for these small actions, we make ourselves feel better. But then we don’t do more. It’s good to say ‘good job’ to ourselves, but you can’t stop at one thing. Being a kind person means being kind most of the time—not all, because that is impossible, but most.
Being kind to someone has proven effects on not just them but you. According to Thrive Global, it can boost your dopamine levels, making you feel good. And even gives you emotional warmth, which leads to a healthy heart—in truth, being kind benefits all those around you by brightening their days as well as your life. Generally, kindness comes back around; you compliment someone, and they find themselves wanting to compliment someone else.
Just the other day, this random little girl came up to me and said that she liked my hair. So, of course, I instantly started smiling and told her I liked her princess dress, and she bounced off back to her mother. It doesn’t take much to make someone happy, just a few comments or a little message.
In truth, this week creates kindness out of necessity. If you haven’t done the act on a random day for no reason, you are using this day to grow your self-esteem. It’s like if your friend writes you a letter on a random day, you’ll be happier than a card on your birthday. Or if your significant other gets you a rose because they were thinking about you. Think about it.
To be a kind and compassionate person, you need to do these little things. Maybe not all the time, but not just on some random day someone put on the calendar.
