SLC is Alabama HOSA’s biggest event of the year where nearly 2,000 future health professionals get together for competitions, networking, exhibitions, and the important election of the state officers. This year’s key speaker was Cory Greenwood.
Bob Jones HOSA competed in the State Leadership Conference in Montgomery, AL in the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa. There were also workshops and colleges seeking out like-minded individuals to learn more about their programs. One of the most popular workshops was the “Immunohematolog; Blood Typing; Phlebotomy” sponsored by UWA. One of the attendees, Anjana Raman, explained, “They had stations for blood typing and drawing blood from a fake vein. There were fake arms with simulated vessels running through, and we got to practice with them. Simulated blood for the blood typing station clotted up when we mixed it with an opposing antibody, and anyone who’s taken PBS knows how interesting it is to see.”
Networking is a large part of SLC. “Sure! I love working on the communications side of HOSA because it means I can share all that we do for the community. It’s also amazing seeing all the students coming together with a shared interest in healthcare!” Lyla Zomkowski stated.
