I am sure you have seen the posters around the school advertising our school’s Japanese Culture Club (*´ω`*), but the real question is, why haven’t you joined? Well, I’m sure after this article, you will join JCC! However, if you have any doubts or questions, don’t worry, I’m here to answer them.
First of all, what is it about? To answer the question, the Japanese Culture Club tries to incorporate Japanese culture through fun activities, historical lessons, or both. Ritsuko Kenzuka, the president of the JCC, states, “We try to incorporate Japanese culture by introducing the history and background of different cultural topics. For example, we talk about the history of Nintendo, Japanese Christmas traditions, and the origin of karaoke.”
Moreover, they have had plenty of other fun activities, for example, they had a whole lesson on making sushi on one of the days of Setsubu, a Japanese festival that is held annually at the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is a day to drive away evil spirits and invite good luck, primarily through Mamemaki (Bean Throwing) and Ehomaki (thick, uncut sushi roll).
JCC did Ehomaki as seen here:
They also had a Christmas karaoke party as well as teaching the origins of Karaoke (I had no idea it originated in Japan, so cool!):
That was last year, 2025. Now, what is JCC planning to do this year? “This school year, we are planning to hold events such as Karaoke, Hanami, and a big celebration at the end of the year,” said Ritsuko Kenzuka, the president of the Japanese Culture Club. They had another karaoke session this Monday (March 9, 2026).
So why was JCC created? Ritsuko added, “We established JCC to introduce Japanese culture to more people. We want everyone to know that beyond anime and other Japanese pop culture, there are many other fascinating aspects of Japanese culture that people may not be aware of.”
Well, now that you are clearly interested, literally shaking to join the awesome Japanese Culture Club. Where is it? And, when is it? The meetings are usually during Patriot Prep on Mondays, twice a week. Events are announced on GroupMe and Instagram. It is Mrs. Saldago’s room, N121!
