Want a headstart in the engineering field?
Almost 20,000 people in Huntsville, Alabama have engineering degrees according to The Huntsville Times. Engineers in the Huntsville area aren’t just competing with local engineers for jobs. It’s a global market.
Mr. Rapier and Mrs. Gaines are the engineering teachers at Bob Jones, and many of their former students have moved on to become engineers. They teach three classes: Principles of Engineering, Advanced Engineering, and Engineering Internship.
The businesses which commonly offer internships are SAIC, Miltec, SCD, Adtran, Raytheon, and AOS. They try to find businesses that are close to Bob Jones, such as in Research Park. In order to intern, students must have completed the first two engineering classes, have a minimum GPA, and complete an interview. Some companies require advanced math and science credits.
The Engineering Internship class is eighteen weeks long. According to Mr. Rapier, the first four to six weeks are spent preparing and searching for places that are looking for interns. The next twelve weeks are weeks of hard work at their internship. Design, computer, and software engineering are the most common types of projects, but they also may do some electrical, mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering. The work that they do is not just practice work; it is actually being used.
The Engineering Academy at Bob Jones is training students excellently so that when they step out into the real world they are well prepared.
