FCA Fridays at BJHS

FCA met in the small gym on Friday. It started at 7:15 A.M., and the crowd was enormous. Everyone was laughing, talking with their friends, eating yummy Bojangles biscuits, or visiting with the coaches and teachers. Even though the meetings are angled toward Christian athletes, many people there weren’t involved with sports and just enjoyed the atmosphere.

Coach Rogers, one of the main teachers involved, tried to include each and every student and made sure everyone was having a good time. “Everyone is welcome; we are trying to get as many people here as possible,” he said.

Some sophomores were also trying to lead the others into different group activities and games. Ford Luttrell, James Taylor, and Lenon Anderson were all standing at the front of the room playing music and socializing with others. As an icebreaker, they told all the students in the room to write a lie on their shoe with a Sharpie. Afterwards, they all stood up together and began to stomp on the floor as a metaphor for stomping their lies down.

With a partner, they played a game called “gorilla, man, gun,” which seemed to resemble rock, paper, and scissors. They stood back-to-back with their partners, and when the counting and humming of “gorilla, man, and gun” stopped, they turned around. If the two partners tied, they were both out. The laughing was contagious as they each tried to beat the other in the game. The coaches and teachers were laughing, and the students were laughing as well.

This morning the FCA meeting was highlighting the Dance Team and Cheerleaders. The Dance Team and Cheerleaders walked to the front of the room and led everyone in a big group dance. Every person in the room danced along to the upbeat rhythm and sang along to the words. Each week the FCA meetings highlight a team of the school and post updates on their Twitter page.

Near the end of the meeting, one of the leaders gathered everyone around him and yelled, “ Who’s got my back?” to which everyone yelled back, “We’ve got your back!” A few of the students discussed what changes FCA would make for the upcoming school year, and everyone seemed to agree: they wanted more students involved.

FCA meets every Friday morning in the small gym. It really shows how close Bob Jones High School is and how much fun students, athletes, and teachers can have together.
