In the Arms of an Actor
January 22, 2016
The football game fades to black as it transitions to a commercial break. You reach for the remote, intending to mute all the incoming car and insurance and car insurance commercials, but then you hear it.
The sweet tones of “In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah McLachlan ring out, standing the hairs on your neck up. The music evokes deep emotions from the bottom of your heart as you turn back to the television.
Sad, sad puppy dog eyes look up at you from behind the crude, cruel bars of a cage. Remorse washes over your whole being. You watch, unable to look away from slide after slide of adorable animals subject to suffering. The hot tears streaming down your cheeks are the only thing that remind you that you are still capable of feeling warmth.
Before Sarah McLachlan even appears on screen to tell you how you can help those poor, helpless animals, your heart breaks and your body trembles with sobs.
Although the Bob Jones Patriot Players’ parody version of Sarah McLachlan’s iconic animal abuse awareness commercial is considerably less heartbreaking and exponentially more funny, the troupers still hope to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Players are competing at the 2016 Southeastern Theatre Conference drama competition, or SETC, with their state-winning show, The Axeman’s Requiem.
Expenses are higher than ever before, and the theatre champions are hoping to knock off some of their expenses by crowdfunding.
Junior and actress in The Axeman’s Requiem and the commercial Maggie Moore said that she enjoyed making the commercial, adding, “It was fun [to make], and acting melodramatically always makes me laugh.”
Senior Daniel Darnell, editor of the video, stated, “I think [the commercial] will definitely help with spreading the word,” relating that people will want to share the video because of its humor.
Moore claimed, “If the commercial is for a good cause I wouldn’t mind making another. Especially since it has helped us so much.” When asked what other commercial she would like to parody, Moore theorized, “…we could attempt a parody of the Allstate commercials- the ones with the destructive person that ruins things. That would be funny and I think we could definitely apply it to drama.”
Basia Marotta, junior actress with the Patriot Players mentioned that the Old Spice body wash commercials have room to be parodied.
With these and more ideas brewing, it is not out of the question that, if the Players qualify to compete at SETC next year, they may very well release another commercial.
