Maybe a First Place at FIRST?

The robotics team is about to compete again!

The combined Bob Jones and James Clemens robotics team, also known as the Mad Rockers, competed in the South’s BEST Robotics Competition in December at Auburn University. They advanced to the championship in Auburn after winning 1st place robot performance in the local Tennessee Valley BEST hub competition a few weeks prior.

BEST Robotics features students building a robot within a short time frame of a few weeks that can complete various tasks designed for the competition’s yearly game theme. This year’s theme was demolition, which involved moving, retrieving, and destroying various game pieces throughout the field. Students gain experience in not only the hardware and programming of the robot but with marketing and public speaking as well.

With a consistent robot and reliable drivers, the Mad Rockers competed in the championship against 38 teams from around the country, all of which won their local hub competitions as well. With a 5th place finish in the seeding rounds, they were able to move on to the semifinals and placed 5th overall in robot performance, a record best for the team.

The team is currently preparing for its next competition, FIRST Robotics Competition, starting the first (no pun intended) week back in January.
