The Bob Jones Fall esports teams travelled to the Magic City ePlex in Birmingham recently to compete in the Alabama esports state championship. The Rocket League team defeated Grissom High School to win the state championship. Principal Sylvia Lambert said in an email, “Amazing team work in defeating Grissom in a hard fought best out of seven game match!”
The League of Legends team suffered a tough loss to Thompson High School but still earned the Runner-Up title.
When asked what these victories mean for the involved students, Coach Aubree White said that the sport is growing rapidly in the high school and college worlds. “This opens up recruiting and scholarship opportunities for these students.”
The respective teams were as follows:
Rocket League
Joshua Vannoy
Ian Barrier
Caleb Cooper
Jacob Fruehwald
Jordan Hazuga
League of Legends
Scott Reid
Tyler Theakston
Cuong Vo
Amber Guo
Riley McGraw
Cong Vo
Sunah Brewer
Grant Harper
The Spring season is now underway. The esports team is looking for business sponsors and partnerships in the hopes of purchase gaming laptops. Currently, the Bob Jones team uses a Mac lab, which isn’t ideal for gaming. Some players also bring their laptops from home. Interested sponsors can contact Coach White at [email protected].
