The Strenuous Sleeping Situation

Matthew Pimmel, Contributor

Are you getting enough sleep?

If you are, good job, I’m proud of you. If not, don’t worry, you’re certainly not alone.

According to this incredibly scientific survey I created in 5 minutes, the overwhelming consensus on how well students regularly sleep is… Eh. This is worrisome because this means that the majority of the student body isn’t getting the proper amount of sleep, which leads to lower overall performance academically. And not just that, but it could potentially lead to a reliance on coffee, soda, or battery acid.

So why are so many teenagers so sleep-deprived? Well, there are a lot of reasons, but how can you circumvent them?

In that same incredibly scientific survey, I asked the students if they do anything to help them sleep. *Ahem* I play music, having my fan on is a necessity. Get off my phone 30 minutes before bed. Doing pull-ups, making sure I get done what I need to get done so I’m not stressed when I go to sleep. Also eating a salad once in a while. You’re welcome, Matty boi. Usually, I turn my fan all the way up and jump into it (for legal reasons, this is a joke). I do actually have this air purifier that makes a lot of calming noise that helps me sleep. I sleep for exactly 4 hours, usually from 12-4 or 2-6, and I have multiple alarms that go off. So when I wake up, I can go back to sleep. I do this like 3 times before getting up. And by the time I’m ready to start my day, I’ve, technically, already had 3-4 naps.

Very cool.

Now while that’s all fine and dandy, here are a few more ways that can help you sleep more and better. Firstly and this one may be hard for some to hear, but having a proper bedtime can help produce melatonin. Secondly, as one of the students said in the survey, turning off all electronics about 30 minutes before bed can also help make getting to sleep easier. Finally, getting in at least a little exercise every day can help with sleep as well.

If you want higher energy throughout the day, better sleep at night, and a nice and easy way to do it, consider trying some of these tips. It could just be the difference between an F and an A. You don’t have to, but I think it’d be neat. I’m Matthew Pimmel, goodbye.
