In a world centered around constant connection, the time an individual spends alone is becoming shorter and shorter with each day. As we ring in the new year, we also shepard in yet another means of staying in touch. And now it’s not even necessary to know who you’re getting in touch with! Freaky, huh?

Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, the predicted, hot new app of 2015 is Wakie, a morning alarm clock app. What sets this early morning alert system apart is that the downloader is not wakened by the shrill tones of traditional alarms or a groovy song of their choice. Instead, they greet the day with a phone call…from a stranger. With over 1.5 million users, the waker could be someone from across town or across the country. Conversations are limited to sixty seconds, with a warning at fifty seconds to avoid awkward goodbyes and promote casual conversation.

Not only can you be woken up, but you can wake others as well! Simply by enabling push notifications, you’ll be sent alerts when a stranger’s alarm goes off and the choice is up to you whether to take the call or not.

When weighing the pros and cons of this app, one of the main concerns brought to light is safety. According to iTunes, “all members are checked after registration and their activity constantly monitored” as a means for promoting a user friendly, safety-driven vibe amongst consumers.

Is Wakie a refreshing way to greet the day and make new connections, or the creepiest, most unsettling means of waking up? The concept of Wakie is, at a distance, genuine in its efforts to promote a friendly way to start the day on a positive note. However, it’s very naive to expect that abuse of this app will not occur in forms of harassment and general inappropriateness. Nice try, Wakie, but we’ll all be sure to sleep with one eye open.
