Gourmet Chefs or Future Burger Flippers?

The “Are You Up to the Challenge?” assignment in the Culinary 2 class helps to prepare students for professional culinary experiences.

Mrs. Bone, the culinary teacher, presents images of professional culinary masterpieces and then the Culinary 2 students have to reverse engineer the process.  Students investigate what techniques, tools, and planning strategies that a professional chef would use to create the menu item.  If students are not familiar with a technique, then they research how to do it.  The Culinary 2 students must recreate the item by the end of the week.

In regard to this week’s challenge, Mrs. Bones said, “[The end results] are really looking wonderful!  Can’t wait to see the final product….and taste it!”

Because the Culinary 2 class shares a block with Mrs. Bone’s Hospitality and Tourism class, Matthew Norton, a senior at Bob Jones, shared his outsider’s opinion of the “Are You Up to the Challenge?” assignment and Culinary 2’s results.  “I like their work. It’s, uh, not too bad. They’re independent and work well together.”  He also informed me that he would like to be part of the Culinary 2 class, if he only had more time in high school.

Mrs. Bone said, “I am REALLY IMPRESSED with this Culinary 2 class. And make sure that’s in all caps!” Her words, not mine.
